Why does Canada still have a Queen?

Please...can someone tell me why Britain (and Canada) still have a queen? Only 5% of Canadians know the Queen is still Canada's Head of State...maybe that's because she's irrelevant? Are Canadians really that much stuck in the past and looking to differentiate themselves from Americans to break off ties with this relic?

  1. And place our trust in a politicized head of state? No thanks!

  2. I wonder the same thing. An accident of birth should not give someone the right to rule, reign, or live lavishly off the largesse of the people. Not in this day and age.

  4. As I have commented on other blogs, I strongly support the monarchy so long as the kink is I.

Why do we still have MPs when they are irrelevant?

  5. That should be "king" although "kink" seems kinky.

  7. Unless you propose an alternative, there's not much that can be said. If you do so, please also consider what needs to be done to get there. You should get your answer.

  8. Strictly speaking, the Queen's Representative in Canada, the Governor General, is titular head of state with (mostly) ceremonial duties.
Having someone who can attend to ceremonial duties full-time adds a bit of cachet from tradition and frees up the Executive somewhat while allowing for diplomatic hob-nobbing - which is likely not a bad thing.
The Queen has a multitude of titles. Our involvement comes from membership in the British Commonwealth : a tie of common language, law and customs worldwide. That has business advantages too.
